This information is to help students in the Interior Design Program at the University of North Texas (UNT ID program) understand the laptop system requirements. Among many design software programs recommended by the UNT ID program, Revit Architecture demands higher system requirements. Obtaining a laptop with the system requirements for Revit Architecture is critical to avoid technical hassles.

Below are the System Requirements for 32 Bit and 64 Bit Autodesk Revit Architecture 2012 based on Autodesk’s website at http://usa.autodesk.com/revit-architecture/system-requirements/

For your reference, the College of Visual Arts and Design (CVAD) labs are running Revit Architecture 2012 and AutoCAD 2012 from Fall 2011 with a Microsoft Windows7 64-bit operating system (OS). Revit Architecture and AutoCAD have been compatible with Windows OS but NOT Mac OS until late 2011. It does not mean you need a PC only for Revit Architecture and AutoCAD. If you have a Mac PC dual platform, you can run them on a Windows OS.

Revit Architecture and AutoCAD operating on Mac OS were released recently though the AutoCAD course in the UNT ID program, which uses these programs on Windows OS only, NOT on Mac OS. Due to the fact that the interfaces on Windows OS and Mac OS are significantly different, learning those programs on Mac OS is fully the student’s responsibility.

Choosing Between a 32-Bit and 64-Bit Operating System

For the high end user, knowing the difference between a 32-bit and a 64-bit processor and an operating system (OS) is vital.

The most basic difference is the amount of memory (RAM) that a 32-bit OS can make use of. If you want to use 4 GB of RAM with a 32-bit system – it is not going to work. Even if you install 4 GB modules, due to technical reasons (explained later), the OS will still be able to detect and make use of a maximum of 3.5 GB.

A computer running a 64-bit OS can process larger numbers and be more efficient with smaller numbers. It means that your computer will be fast. The better benefits of 64-bit computing goes to research institutions and companies where large number crunching calculations are performed. The average user can exploit the benefits of 64-bit computing below.

1. Access more RAM: With a 64-bit operating system, your computer can access more than 4 GB of RAM. So if you need to install more than 4 GB of RAM, 64-bit is the way to go.

2. Software comes in two versions: 32-bit and 64-bit. If a 64-bit version of your favorite application is available and you have a 64-bit OS, go for that. The 64-bit software would be faster and the benefits over a 32-bit version in that case are obvious – there will be a visible difference in processing speeds.

3. Some programs such as data encryption software can benefit greatly from 64-bit registers (if the software is 64-bit compiled) and effectively execute 3 to 5 times faster on 64-bit than on 32-bit.

4. A 64-bit OS can run 32-bit applications, there is backward compatibility.

5. If you have a 64-bit processor, you are safe for the future. 32-bit operating systems are yet to replace 64-bit and you would be already using 64-bit.

There are some drawbacks of 64-bit computing.

1. There are few 64-bit softwares available and to truly take advantage of 64-bit computing, the software has to be 64-bit also. This a drawback, meaning that if you use a 32-bit software on a 64-bit machine, there is no significant difference as you would get when you run the same software on a 32-bit machine.

2. Driver support: If you use a 64-bit OS, you have to use 64-bit device drivers. 32-bit device drivers, the ones that are usually supplied, won’t work with 64-bit. Before you upgrade ensure that there are 64-bit drivers available for your computer.

3. More RAM: 64-bit operating systems consume more RAM than their 32-bit counterpart. This is due to the fact that the same data occupies more space in memory on a 64-bit machine. Ensure that you have 3 GB and more RAM if you want a smooth experience.

4. More expensive.

Free Student Copies of AutoCAD and Revit Architecture
Autodesk website provides free software downloads for students. It includes student versions of AutoCAD, Revit Architecture, etc. Please be aware that CVAD labs are running AutoCAD 2012 and Revit Architecture 2012 from Fall 2011 with Windows7 64-bit operating system. Please check the blog occasionally for updated information.

What is Revit?
Revit is a full 3D Building Information Modeling program, or parametric Computer-Aided Design program, which allows the user to design, create, and publish contract documents to clients, consultants, and construction management teams in the field. The term “parametric” refers to the process of constructing a virtual building manifested in a 3D computer model where each component is created once thus providing bi-directional manipulation that occurs instantly and universally.

Revit produces a reliable digital representation of the building available for design decision making, design scope, scheduling, high-quality construction document production, and cost estimates. Having the ability to keep information up-to-date and accessible in an integrated digital environment gives students a clear vision of their projects, as well as the ability to make informed decisions faster. Revit can be applied across the spectrum of architectural and interior design: schematic design, design development, construction document, building analysis, visualization, etc.

The 3D visualization capabilities of Revit benefits students in understanding how spaces are put together. Revit allows students to view their designs in 3D, enabling them to clearly identify and solve design problems in the early stage of the design process.

Autodesk has developed three versions of Revit: Revit Architecture for architects and building designers, Revit Structure for structural engineers, and Revit MEP for mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineers.

National Raymond Waites Design Competition

The Educational Foundation of IFDA (International Furnishings & Design Association) is inviting currently enrolled full time undergraduate interior design students to enter an exciting national competition.

The winner will receive a $5000 prize PLUS a trip to the April, 2012 High Point International Home Furnishings Market where they will see new furniture and accessory introductions, the latest decorating trends, attend designer seminars, and be guest of honor at a special event hosted by Raymond Waites. The winning entry and entries from 10 Finalists will be on display throughout Market week at Market Square & Suites.

The Screaming Eagles team comprised of Rachael Armstrong, Marta Caceres, Heather Morrow, Rashel Smith, and Chelsey Snider participated in the competition and their design titled "32 degrees of change" was nominated with four other designs from the Student/Individual Group for the People's Choice Award.

During a gallery talk and reception on June 3, the seniors presented their independent study project and the sophomores displayed their models. The work will be on exhibit for three months.

If you get an e-mail along the lines of 'Osama Bin Laden Captured' or 'Osama Hanged', DO NOT open the Attachment. This e-mail is being distributed through countries around the globe. Most likely, your computer will crash by a virus when you open the attachment. This is the worst virus announced by CNN, it has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever. This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where other vital information is kept.

It is also advised that you DO NOT open any message with an attached file called 'Invitation' regardless of who sent it such as close friends. It could be a virus that opens an Olympic Torch which 'burns' the whole hard disc C of your computer. You may receive this kind of emails from someone who has your e-mail address in his/her contact list. So please spread this alert information with whomever you would like to share.

Seniors Won Best Concept in DFW IIDA CRE8 Design Challenge and Fashion Show

UNT Interior Design seniors won Best Concept in the first annual DFW IIDA CRE8 Design Challenge and Fashion Show, April 15. IIDA Dallas Fort Worth City Center presented the 1st Annual CRE8 Design Challenge and Fashion Show benefiting Dress For Success. The challenge was to create a garment in 8 days. Not just any garment, but a garment that celebrates the connection between interior design and fashion. The theme this year was Color, inspired by the Sherwin Williams ColorMix 2011.

Each Design Team was randomly paired with one softgood and one hardgood manufacturer. They worked with the products the Garment Underwriters have ordered, and the final garment must noticeably contain each of the materials. All garments were constructed in 8 days from April 7 – April 15. They were showcased at the CRE8 Fashion Show on Friday, April 15, 2011.

The team of UNT Interior Design seniors received a light blue color from Sherwin Williams called "Breaktime." Their materials were Clarus glass tiles and Wolf Gordon Wallcovering which were this same blue color. 80 percent of our garment had to be constructed with the given materials. The team had 8 days to construct the garment that is seen in the picture. Their concept came from the robins egg blue color that they received. They used gold accents, and created the models hair to look like a birds nest with a gold bird perched in it. They created all the accessories: the clutch, bracelet, and belt from the tiles and wallcovering. At the end of the night the UNT Interior Design team received the award for best concept.

Visiting Scholar from Korea for collaboration

Dr. Hwabong Kim, a visiting scholar, and Mrs. Kim were invited to the College of Visual Arts and Design Annual Scholarship Luncheon on April 12, 2011. Dr. Kim is a professor at Gyeongnam National University of Science and Technology in Korea. He visits the University of North Texas (UNT) to collaborate with Jin Gyu “Phillip” Park, a faculty member in the Department of Design at UNT.

Dr. Kim is also a donor of the Interior Design Visiting Scholar Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to an ID student who passed the sophomore review with preference to out-of-state students. The recipient of this scholarship is Hannah Kim. The scholarship ceremony was exciting as this is the 51st anniversary for the annual Voertman Student Competition.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION OF THE JOB:
This is a technical and functional position whereby the Designer will work directly with the Sales Force and will be hands-on in the design and development of 3-D models which provide light calculations for projects.

Job Duties:
• Gather information from sales force, architects, and engineers to build 3D models in AGI 32 program.
• Perform calculations in AGI 32 to verify light levels for projects.
• Work with lighting designers/architects/engineers/distributors/contractors to revise layouts according to required parameters.
• Perform Comcheck reports for projects to ensure designs are compliant with energy codes.
• Work with AutoCAD program to create models and distribute calculations to clients.

Job requirements/qualificatons:
• Proficient in AutoCAD.
• Ability to multitask and be proactive.
• Exceptional organizational, prioritization, time management skills with attention to details.
• Good interpersonal and people management skills. Ability to work closely with customers.
• Bachelors or Associates Degree, Engineering, CAD, or related discipline.
• Ability to work efficiently while enjoying the office atmosphere.

2011 Student Lighting Design Competition

In cooperation with the Philadelphia area IALD and LIGHTFAIR International, IES Philadelphia Section is sponsoring a student lighting design competition open nationally to all undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in an accredited U.S. institution of higher learning and majoring in one of the following fields: lighting/illumination design, architecture, engineering, and interior design.

The winning designs will be presented in the Lighting Education Lounge at LIGHTFAIR International 2011, scheduled at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, May 17-19 in Philadelphia, and will also be showcased in a window display at Macy's Philadelphia flagship store. The winning team will receive a $1000 award and second place will receive $500. Participants should organize into groups of no more than 4 students and work cooperatively to develop submissions. Position is a non paid internship. However assistant designer will receive a generous commission for every interior design contract secured. Not all work is design related. Graphic skills such as Photoshop strongly desired. Owner is looking for a confident, creative fast Learner in the field of interior design.

Responsibilities:
-Meet with clients and assess needs, take detailed measurements/notes, and provide color scheme consultations
-Construct color boards or inspiration boars for clients
-Create simple hand drawn renderings with color pencil when required
-Develop design plan and story board or inspiration after meeting with client to pitch business
-Source vendors, fabrics, accessories
-Manage vendor relationships such as custom upholstery shop or drapery maker
-Produce electronic design schemes
-Assistant will also be responsible for reaching out to contractors and other vendors to introduce business and other small administrative.

SETE Available On-line During Nov. 29 - Dec. 17, 2010

UNT students are being asked to evaluate teaching effectiveness using the Student Evaluation of Teaching Effectiveness (SETE). Administration of SETE begins Monday, November 29th and will be available until Friday, December 17th, 2010. Students will be able to complete a SETE for organized lecture courses, labs, seminars and practicum courses with more than 3 students enrolled as requested by the specific college/school. Courses with fewer than 3 students will be included if the course is cross-listed and the total enrollment of the combined courses is greater than 3. Cross-listed courses will receive a combined SETE score.

Recycled Bottles Daylight Project Brightened Art Building Stairwells

Interior Design program seniors’ project brightened inside the stairwells in the Art building. Bruce Nacke of the Interior Design Program faculty assigned students to create a project that would enhance daylight inside the stairwells for an interior design topics class.

EDRA 42 Graduate Student Workshop

The Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA) offers a wonderful opportunity for students pursuing environment-behavior and/or environmental design research.

The Graduate Student Workshop is a new initiative of the EDRA designed to provide a forum for graduate students to present and discuss their ongoing research with senior mentors in environment-behavior design research. The purpose of the workshop is to strengthen and further thesis / dissertation work, as well to support the development of networks for young researchers in this area, both with senior researchers and with other graduate students.

Our senior, Zach Weihrich has been selected as a 2010 HKS Design Fellow. He will be joining two of their peers from local Universities to participate in a design charrette with 9 design professionals at the HKS international headquarters in Dallas, Texas. The charrette begins on Friday November 12th and will conclude with a final jury presentation Monday evening November 15, 2010.

HKS initiated the design fellowship in 2006 in order to cultivate emerging design talent; excite and stimulate new design approaches; and simultaneously provide a service to benefit the communities they serve. This is the first year HKS has opened this up to students and they are looking forward to an exciting exchange of ideas in design.

College Art Association Fellowship for MFA Students

Full details on the recently restored Professional-Development Fellowships in the Visual Arts, including the application form, have just been posted to the College Art Association (CAA) website.

Later this fall, CAA will award five grants of $5,000 each to outstanding students who will receive MFA degrees in calendar year 2011. Honorable mentions, awarded at the discretion of the jury, will receive a free one-year CAA membership and complimentary registration to the Annual Conference.

CAA’s Professional-Development Fellowships in the Visual Arts offer financial assistance to promising MFA candidates. Fellows are honored with grants to help them with various aspects of their work, whether it be for job-search expenses or purchasing materials for the studio. Applications must be postmarked by Friday, October 1, 2010.

UNT Interior Design Seniors Competed for IIDA Auction + Fashion Show

The IIDA student design team, representing the University of North Texas (UNT) Interior Design Program - Katy Cagle and Adelia Castellanos-Schleusz, walked away with the award "Best Runway Walk" in IIDA Auction + Fashion Show on April 23, 2010. Ms. Adelia wore and displayed the garment down the runway at the Aloft Hotel in Dallas, Texas. The theme was "Old is New" and they competed against several of the top design firms in Dallas along with two universities including but not limited to: HOK, Perkins + Will, Gensler, HKS, TCU, and Art Institute of Dallas. UNT was the only university to walk away with a prize.

Garment description:
The garment provides a contemporary approach on saloon fashion during the California Gold Rush that changed many of the "old" rules governing society and social codes. One of the most refreshing parts of life in the gold fields was freedom to act, live and dress the way one wanted. The dress is made out of galvanized fencing wire and plastics with various recyclable content. Trash bags are wrapped, tufted and pulled through a wire frame in order to create a new and innovative interpretation of traditional saloon attire.

ICA&CA Texas Chapter and Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity Dream Dallas Home Design Competition

The Texas Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Classical America is teaming with Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity to sponsor a vernacular housing design competition. This collaboration was forged to engage professionals and students in the fields of architecture and interior design to enrich transitioning neighborhoods by inspiring attractive housing designs that can be readily built by Habitat for Humanity volunteers.

The competition will be launched at a kickoff event on April 22, 2010. Designs will be accepted throughout the summer and the winners will be announced at an awards event in September 2010. Their ultimate goal is to raise the funds to enable Habitat for Humanity to build a house in west Dallas based on the winning entry.

Note that although the entry fee is $250, students may submit an email requesting a grant of $200 to help defray their cost. Emails outlining the request may be sent to ica@lebarchitects.com

They encourage registered entrants to attend the question and answer session held on April 22, 6:30pm at the Gilliland Residence in Dallas. Entry registration due is April 30, 2010. Submissions due by July 30, 2010.

There will be cash prizes for the design competition:

First prize – $3,000
Second prize – $1,000
Honorable mention – Five prizes of $250 each

What is the SETE?

The Student Evaluation of Teaching Effectiveness (SETE) is a valuable tool to help UNT attain teaching excellence. It contains a 12 item survey which collects the student’s view of teaching effectiveness and examines the following three dimensions of teaching:

Does the instructor present the material in a clear and organized manner;
Does the instructor create a good environment for learning;
Does the instructor help students become self-regulated learners.

In addition to the 12 items, students will provide their opinions about the instructor and class.
This evaluation is anonymous. Instructors will only get an overall score and scale scores (the weighted responses, of course not individual response) for each of the three domains.

When will the SETE be administered?
Administration of SETE begins Monday, April 19, 2010 and will be available through Friday, May 14, 2010.

How will students access the SETE?

A “pagelet” appears on the my.unt.edu which instructs the student to click on the URL for the SETE;
The student will complete their logon for the SETE web site;
The student receives a list of their currently enrolled courses and selects one course at a time for SETE evaluation; and
Each step is a new web page (i.e., after completing the first four questions that measure the first factor, a new page will automatically appear for the next four questions that measure the second factor, etc…) for that class.

Will students have the paper-version of teaching evaluation in addition to the SETE?
No, the SETE is the only evaluation for this semester. Participation in the SETE is critical for future teaching improvement.

Undergraduate Research Fellowship Team Received Best Poster Award in University Scholars Day

Undergraduate Research Fellowship team presented a research project, Growing Green: Investigating Interior Design Student Awareness of Sustainable Design, at the University Scholars Day on April 15, 2010. The research poster has been selected as the Best Poster in Social Science and Humanities.

This study investigates how interior design students’ perception of sustainable design changes over college life. A questionnaire was administered to freshman and seniors groups. The study was chosen as a recipient of an undergraduate research fellowship, an opportunity allowing a team of interior design, communication design, and fiber arts undergraduate students to engage in faculty-directed research activities.

Under faculty mentors’ supervision, the students explored concepts of sustainability, the research process, methodology, data collection and analysis. The students analyzed collected data and interpreted them in meaningful ways. Combining the systematic inquiry of quantitative and qualitative analysis with information design graphic techniques created a synergy unique to the College of Visual Arts and Design context.

The results indicate that the senior group’s awareness of sustainable design is significantly higher than the freshman group. The results are supported by both quantitative and qualitative data analyses. In conclusion, an educational curriculum with sustainability emphasis enhances students’ understanding of sustainable design.

This five-week long course is an introduction to the fundamentals of 3D computer drafting based on Revit Architecture 2010 with a focus specifically on interior design. Students learn the concepts of Building Information Modeling (BIM) and how the strength of the software, Revit Architecture, is employed to automate the design and the documentation process. Students explore the basic interface, tools, and 3D model creation.

Learning Objectives
The primary objective of this course is to teach students the concepts of BIM and introduce the tools for parametric building design and documentation using Revit Architecture 2010. After completing this course, students should be able to:

- Define BIM and differentiate BIM and CAD
- Understand the interface of Revit Architecture
- Understand how a Revit project is structured.
- Navigate the various views of a project using the project browser.

Giving Away Drafting Table

Andrew Milligan is the Programme Director for Interior and Environmental Design at the University of Dundee’s Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design. He has worked for NRS Architects, Jenkins & Marr Architects, and held a commercial post with the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland. A Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and a member of UK wide Interior Educators group, he has taught in design institutions in Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Glasgow, and at Duncan of Jordanstone. He initiated the IFS Interiors Forum Scotland, and organised two international conferences: Thinking inside the Box(2007), and Interior Tools Interior Tactics(2008). He is co-editor of 'Thinking Inside the Box: An Interior Design Theory Reader' (2008), and has published journal papers with Co-Design, and IDEA Interior Architecture Education Association.

He is currently producing a new IFS publication. He led interdisciplinary activities between 2004/08 in Dundee, and workshops between Architecture and Interiors since 2005. He contributed to the blended learning Pg Contemporary Contextual Practice. His research includes: Big Brother, Occupations, Brighton (2009); Drawing Sounds at the EPDE conference Barcelona (2008); Reasons for Being at IDEC (2008); CEBE Centre for Education in the Built Environment funded case study (2007); Spatial Narratives at the Narratives conference, Loughborough (2007); Drawing & Intermediality, Groningen (2008); DeCon ReCon, Educating Designers in a Global Context , Salzburg (2006), and is interested in the relationship between digital technologies, space and domesticity.
